Image Analysis Assignment from Literature by Women: Transatlantic Anglophone Literature

Course Context

Course Title: Literature by Women: Transatlantic Anglophone Literature
Instructor: Dr. Rachel Johnston, TWU

Description: The transatlantic lens of this course will allow us to trace the ways in which women writers were shaping their authorial identities by participating in social activism, pushing publishing boundaries, forming their print culture identities, and cultivating literary relationships– across the Atlantic. In addition to weekly short essays, discussion questions, and responses to the readings from Transatlantic Anglophone Literatures, 1776-1920, you will choose an image from the text and write an image analysis with the audience of the Teaching Transatlanticism website in mind. As you read before each class meeting, take note of images and connections with these images that stand out to you– these connections will help you explain the context of your chosen image later on. The image analysis will give you the opportunity to decode the rhetorical choices of the artists and participants and to take a deeper look at the evolution of print culture on both sides of the Atlantic.
